The Rio Grande
The route of the Rio Grande River travels from southwest Colorado to the Gulf of Mexico.
In 1932, the Rio Grande shifted paths about 100 acres into the business district of Chamizal, Mexico. This caused utter devistation in the the town of Chamizal. This caused the Mexican-American border to shift as well. Within the next 42 years, areas began to grow again until the river shifted again in 1974 back to near its original place. That is a difference of 42 years and scientists believe it will shift again in about 2016, another 42 years after 1974.
This can effect a city by causing all the farmland to die, whitch in a place like nebraska, can wipe out our economy. It can aslo harm property, buildings, roads, and people to much savarity. It can compleatly wipe out houses and even nieghbor hoods. In Chamizals case, it wiped out modes of transportation to the citisans jobs.
To avoid disaster, cities can lay sand bags down around roads, airports, etc. They can also build a dam or levee around a city. But most effective, people can build a trench in the path of the river, leading it away. Many cities often result in destruction, but not all. So make sure your house has a good foundation on high ground.
