Indian Ocean Tsunami
The people of Sumantra Indonesia had very little time to prepare for the Indian Ocean tsunami. At first, an earthquake started and caught the people off guard. Then the tsunami got triggered from the tectonic plates moving and since it started so close to the coast, people had barely any time to prepare.
Before a tsunami, I would get an emergency kit together, make sure you have your portable radio tuned in to a weather station, and I would also take a first aid class to make sure you know how to handle wounds. I would than go to any shelter that the city had put up or has in use and I would stay there. I would also stay aways from beaches or coasts since tsunamis start from the ocean. I would also make sure that you are at the highest possible ground level in your area. During a tsunami, I would be in a sheltered place that my city has provided me and I would also make sure I am tuned in to the weather channel on my portable radio. After a tsunami, I would go out and help people who are injured or who have died in the tsunami. I would make sure I am not by flooded parts of my city or town. I would help try to un-trap people who are stuck in debris. I would also make sure my family was ok too.
In Sumantra, there were only a few evacuation routes laid out. Many people in the city of Sumantra did not know where those evacuation routes were laid out. Also since it happened so freak, people forgot those routes and tried to just run. Another problem with the evacuation routes, was that since the earthquake had hit before, some evacuation routes were destroyed. I think in many coast cities they do have evacuation routes and the evacuation routes work very effectively. In Sumantra situation though, they did not work as they should have.
Facts
On December 24, 2006, a freak earthquake and tsunami hit. People had little time to prepare for these events so few survived. Between 120 - 150 thousand people died that day and over millions had no home. The earthquake and tsunami hit 11 countries and affect our whole world, causing it to vibrate about 1 centimeter. Some people say that it was the biggest tsunami ever but scientists recorded it as the 3rd largest tsunami. This all happened because of the tectonic plates moving in the earth.
The Indian Ocean tsunami was recorded to be between a 9.0 - 9.2 magnitude. The earthquake that actually triggered the tsunami was recorded to be between a 9.0 - 9.3 magnitude. The earthquake and tsunami happened along the Indian Ocean coasts and the wave height was about 30 meters high or 98 feet. Some of the countries involved in the earthquake and tsunami were Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and India. Countries have contributed billions of dollars to help the countries and get them back on track to success.
One way that people could better have prepared for this horrible event is placing better beakers to monitor the tectonic plates. The beakers monitor the earths tectonic plates and better beakers could have helped prepare for the tsunami. I think many peoples lives could have been saved if our scientists would have monitored the plates better. I know that since 2004, we have better technology so we may be able to stop this better.
