Surfing in panama By:Jonathan Quiros
There are many places
to surf in the world but one of the best places is Panama. In Panama there are
a variety of waves to ride but how do waves possibly connect to surfing? Well, I
will answer 6 questions that reflect this topic and by the end you will know
the ways that waves connect to surfing and some other facts.
What kinds of waves do surfers look for?Surfers look for breaking waves. Breaking waves are waves that crash down and form a tunnel.
What makes a great surfing wave? Factors that make a great surfing wave are wind speed, wind duration, and fetch. The reasons that they make great surfing waves follow. The greater the wind speed the larger the wave, the longer the wind blows the larger the wave (wind duration), and the larger the area the wind affects the larger the wave (fetch)
How are different waves approached? Almost all waves are approached by first matching the speed of the wave by paddling and then immediately jumping up to your feet as the wave begins to carry you.
Which part of a wave does a surfer ride? Why?An exprienced surfer rides the curving/bowling face of the wave (also called the wall) were they can perform a number of tricks. They also ride the bottom of the wave to ride a remarkable section of the tube and sometimes the top of a wave (called the lip) to perform a trick called a “floater”. Beginners usually ride the _broken wave (known as the white wash) where it is easier to catch a wave.
What conditions do experienced surfers avoid? Why? An experienced surfer in Panama would avoid powerful storms with hurricane winds as well as lightening. Powerful storms can cause killer waves to form that are hundreds of feet tall and lightening will cause electricity to be in the water which can severely harm you. Overall, surfing in these conditions can cause severe injury or death.
What are the dangers of surfing? The dangers of surfing are drowning, collisions, marine life such as sharks, seals, jelly fish, and sting rays, rip currents, and sea beds.
