El Nino affects Pacific Ocean & fishermen
Does El Nino affect whether you can have fish for dinner?
Yes, it does as a matter of fact, when warm waters come in the fish swim away because the warmer water doesn't have very many nutrients in the water. That is because you need COLD water to sink to the bottom of the ocean which causes the nutrients on the bottom to be forced to the surface (this is called upwelling). Since the water is warm in an El Nino affect, the upwelling slows down. When it slows down the nutrients stay at the bottom and the fish have nothing to eat. The fish will leave the area to find nutrient rich waters elsewhere. If the fish leave, then the fishermen won’t catch any fish. If the fishermen don't catch any fish, there is nothing to sell to the fish markets. If there are NO fish in the market then I have no fish to buy for my meal.
