Is there a tsunami on its way to the Carribbean?
Written by: Libby Knudsen
The Caribbean is a wonderful and beautiful place to go. When it comes to storms, it is not the prettiest picture. Many people have been killed or seriously injured from a tsunami. The good part is, most places have evacuation routes laid out. Some tsunamis are stronger than others. They destroy cities, towns, and villages! Here are a few steps and facts on what to do if a tsunami strikes your area.
You hear the announcer on the radio say, “There is a tsunami coming. Get prepared and evacuate the area.” These are some things you should do. Monitor the ocean and keep track of the size of the waves. Make sure to also stay far away from the shore and go to higher ground. Always make sure to keep the radio on to listen to the updates on the storm. Go get any necessary food items but stay away from large buildings near the coast. Don’t forget to secure your home but if you have to travel over any bridge or anything over water, do not go back to your home. Make sure you make a specific meeting place for you and your family to go after the tsunami. If you have any important pictures or files, make sure that you document them ahead of time. These next steps are what to do when a tsunami hits.
The first and most important step is to evacuate the area. If you are unable to go too far away, go as far away as possible. You might even want to evacuate before the tsunami starts. When you do this, do not go near the ocean and do not go on any collapsible land masses. The next step is, take a radio with you. Keep extra batteries with you always! The updates on the tsunami will help navigate where you should evacuate to. The final and most clear step
in my opinion, is don’t go near the ocean! Never go towards your problem. That would just be a bad idea! After that terrifying storm, there are a few things that you have to do. The first thing is to check for injuries on yourself and others around you. Make sure you treat them as soon as possible. Do not go back to your original area until someone gives the all clear sign. When that sign is made, check the damages on your home. Make sure you have your family at your meeting place too. A few days or a week after the tsunami, schedule a community meeting to discuss the damages and prices on everything and how to solve these problems. When you do this, make sure to discuss how these decisions will effect the rest of the town or city.
There is a place on the Caribbean called Guadeloupe. This place is very pretty and well know. Research shows, that in the next year, there is a high percent chance of there being a tsunami there. The good thing is that they have evacuation routes so they can get out in time. The water and the waves are changing all of the time no matter where you go. Tsunamis are happening more often. There are different opinions on why this is happening. Make sure that you use these steps whenever a tsunami strikes! You can never tell when they will hit.
